Australia players do the Jason Terry / New York Jets "Fly Like a Jet" dance. |
"If you think Australia's getting out of their group this year, you're crazier than the trade that sent me to Houston." |
Their abbreviations are anagrams of one another-- ASU and AUS. In recent years, the "Socceroos" (arguably the best nickname of any World Cup team) have been regular World Cup participants. In 2006, they even got to the round of 16 when Tim Cahill and Mark Viduka were in their primes. The Sun Devils usually make it to some mid-level bowl game and are in the NCAA tournament often enough that it's not a surprise when they're there. They even periodically win a tournament game, or get to a major bowl if a star like James Harden or Jake Plummer is around. However, neither team is ever really a championship contender, and this year is no exception. And at the end of the day, winning or losing isn't what really matters to Aussies and ASU students. They're both too busy partying, enjoying the sunshine, and trying to avoid terrifyingly venomous insects and reptiles.
